Low Level Light Therapy (LLT)

History of LLLT
In 1967, a few years after the first working laser was invented, Endre Mester in Semmelweis University in Hungary researched the concept that laser radiation might cause cancer in mice. He shaved the hair off their backs, divided them into two groups and rendered laser treatment with a low powered ruby laser (694-nm) to one group. His findings revealed the mice did not get cancer but the hair on the treated group grew back more quickly than the untreated group. Dr. Mester's work was the first demonstration of the positive effects of laser light or "laser biostimulation" positively increasing hair growth.
Currently, Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), also known as “cold laser”, “soft laser”, “biostimulation” or “photobiomodulation” is considered part of non-surgical approach to treating hair loss. LLLT does not cause pain and does not cause burning or scarring of the skin. The mechanism stimulating hair growth is the visible red light emitted from the cap's lasers diodes that is absorbed by the skin and hair cells.
LLLT is also thought to increase blood flow and stops hair loss in 85% of cases, while stimulating new hair growth in 55% of cases according to the medical literature. LLLT is FDA approved for use in the United States. It's safety and efficacy has been proven in Europe and Asia for decades. LLLT is a non surgical treatment option for restoration and stabilization of hair loss. It is an important part of medical therapy for those patients who are not candidates for surgery, or for men and women with thinning hair or hair loss. Some surgical patients desire laser therapy for additional hair stimulation after hair surgery.

Traditional LLLT
Typically laser therapy was available by a laser comb or by in office therapy sessions at a physicians office. These earlier laser therapies caused much inconvenience for the patients because an appointment was required in a physicians office three times a week for twenty sessions. The therapy sessions although often successful, ceased giving the hair stimulation effect when the therapy sessions ended.
